Teaching at Overseas Chinese Middle School has been a great experience so far. The kids have unbelievable amounts of energy and go absolutely crazy when you bring up-to-date images and materials to class, really enjoying listening to conditional sentences in songs by The Beautiful South and describing characters from Harry Potter for example. Getting them speaking together and using the language in the text book is the main focus, but a lot of fun is had bringing in everyday words and phrases to keep them motivated; I am constantly amazed at how they react to certain nouns and phrases and how entertaining they can find English (explaining how ‘flip flops’ get their name is one example that will stick in my mind for a while…)。
Teaching such large classes has taken a little getting used to, but also proved an enjoyable challenge that I will take with me when I leave. Equally, the chance to get to know the students better in the smaller Bond classes allows more tailored lessons and a very positive teaching experience. |
